BBQ Grand Champion and Head of Slap Yo’ Daddy BBQ Features KPOP Sauce in Winter Grilling Cook-Off Competition
Yes, you read that correctly. Harry Soo is the founder and head chef of Slap Yo’ Daddy BBQ, one of the top BBQ teams in America. First off, if you’re going to call your team Slap Yo’ Daddy BBQ, you’d better be able to back it up with some incredible food. Mr. Soo, who on the weekdays works as an IT guy and is a single father of two, over-delivers and more than deserves the right to be the head of Slap Yo’ Daddy BBQ.
Mr. Soo began competing in BBQ competitions back in 2008 and quickly became one of the top ranked teams in Kansas City’s BBQ Society. Mr. Soo was then selected among 5,000 professional teams to appear on TLC’s BBQ Pitmasters first season in 2010. In the season finale, Mr. Soo stunned the nation by defeating all the teams in the show, including two BBQ World Champions, in the winner-take-all Rib Throwdown in Texas. Mr. Soo and Slap Yo’ Daddy BBQ has gone on win over 80 BBQ competitions in the U.S., as well as in Canada and Britain.
Born in Malaysia, Mr. Soo credits Asian flavors and tastes for giving his barbeque an edge. Mr. Soo is known for swapping common ingredients, such as brown sugar, out for Asian similarities, such as gula melaka (palm sugar originated from Malaysia). Mr. Soo features many great recipes on his website, including Grilled Kalbi Lamb Chops, Miso Marinated Flat Iron Steak with Soba Noodles, Slapilicious BBQ Pulled Pork Sushi Rolls, and Sous Vide Korean-style Shortribs.
Given his story, passion, and of course, the catchy team name, we wanted to see what Mr. Soo thoughts on KPOP Sauce were. We sent him several bottles and he loved it, saying that KPOP Sauce was “just the right amount of spice and hint of sweetness.” We were thrilled that he enjoyed KPOP Sauce, but what he did next surprised us even more.
Mr. Soo was selected to be one of four grill masters to compete in Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association’s first-ever online Winter Grilling Cook-Off. Each grill master submits a video sharing their favorite winter barbecue recipes, and fans vote for their favorite recipe video. The grill master with the most votes by February 4 wins.
For the competition, Mr. Soo shared his tips for grilling in Alaska, showcasing Bacon Pineapple Mozzarella Rings, Tandoori Turkey, Cauliflower, Lobster with Bearnaise Sauce, and Tomahawk Steaks.
