Popular Korean-American Desserts For The Summer!

Treat your sweet tooth this summer to some popular Korean-American desserts that are all the craze right now! While you can find many Korean dessert shops with these popular desserts, try your hand at making some of these desserts at home. You’ll be surprised at how simple and delicious some of them are!

Lately, there has been an infatuation with Korean waffle variations!  Adapted for the hot weather, all of these waffles include ice cream and a variety of toppings. Croffles, or croissant waffles, are exactly as they sound! The croissants are pressed in waffle machines, girdle pans, or really anything that can press them down. The result? A flaky, buttery, crispy-on-the-outside waffle that you can customize with your favorite toppings. Bubble waffles are egg waffles that look like those bubble wraps that keep fragile items safe. These waffles are folded into a cone to create the foundation for ice cream and other toppings! Finally, the fish waffle is a fish-shaped cone that is stuffed with ice cream! The cones are usually used as the outside of a fish-shaped pastry with a sweet red bean paste in the center. But in the summer, ice cream replaces the usually warm filling!

2. Dalgona + Fluffy Dalgona Coffee Cake

Made with shaved ice or shaved condensed milk (or regular milk) that has been frozen, bingsu is a classic summer dessert that cools the body with its refreshing taste. Easy to make at home, bingsu can be customized with any of your favorite toppings, but is popularly topped with ingredients like fresh fruits, mochi, red bean, and injeolmi (powdered dried beans)! The most popular bingsu options are usually mango, strawberry, green tea, red bean, and injeolmi.

Made with a large slab of toast that is either cut into or hollowed out and then filled with honey, butter, and/or condensed milk and then tossed into the oven, honey bread brick toast is a sweet dessert that is masked as a “breakfast.” Popular topping options are ice cream, whipped cream, fruit, or even an egg!

While our classic American donut holes are cakey and dense, the classic Korean rice donut holes are chewy, crispy, and usually consist of a sweet red bean paste in the center. We recommend you pair this deep fried rice flour ball with an unsweetened iced cold coffee! Because the donut holes are rolled in sugar, the more bitter coffee suits balances the sweet and dense dessert well!
